Broadcast Creates Unique Opportunities
My Personal Experience
While broadcast journalism is relatively new to me, I understand and appreciate the vital role it has on the Southerner. It provides students with a unique platform to develop essential communication skills, fostering confidence in public speaking, writing, and video production. By offering a dynamic, visual perspective on school events and issues, it engages a wider audience, encouraging active participation in the school community. Moreover, it prepares young journalists for the evolving media landscape, equipping them with skills applicable in the digital age. In high school newspapers, broadcast journalism is a powerful tool for informing, educating, and inspiring both students and the broader community.
Total Editorial Board Focus this Year
Have Certain Cycles where People are Required to do Multimedia &
Assign Specific Editors to the Sections
As an editorial board, we have made a collective effort to prioritize and integrate multimedia this year. We have instituted a system where certain staffers are required to venture and do multimedia on certain cycles so that we have sufficient content to sustain that section. Additionally, we have made new roles on the editorial board where certain staffers are solely dedicated to multimedia. This increases the vibrance and collective effort toward the program.

I have had the unique opportunity to work in broadcast journalism to produce a video on a Stacy Abrams support rally last year during the 2022 elections. Partnering with Diana Jachman, who is individually assigned to the multimedia section, allowed me to gain a host of insights and grow as a reporter holistically in a field that I do not typically touch. Utilizing a different type of camera to shoot this content and understanding the editing process was difficult and different but in the end, the product was so much more grabbing. Hearing the true passion in the voices of the participants at the rally created a deep emotional draw that was more powerful than their words alone would convey.

HERstory Podcast
Additionally, I have worked in podcast/audio broadcast journalism. One of my favorite works was a piece called “Pink Politics: Remembering HERstory,” where I discussed misrepresentation of women's studies in history classes throughout middle and high school. Utilizing effects like overlay of voices and music, I worked hard to produce a piece that was engaging about a topic that is more cumbersome. In the end, I think hearing the voices of the different people we interviewed really brought life the story in a way that it would not have been on paper.

Looking Forward
Pairing Stories with Multimedia, Easy to at Least Create an Additive Podcast to a Story
As I spend the next year and a half on the paper further, I hope to incorporate and layer multimedia components with lots of my stories, especially because podcasts can easily be compiled from just the interview audio. I think this would add a lot more depths to pieces and create different ways for audiences to engage with the Southerner Online.
The Southerner is distinctive, though, from the Audio Visual Tech Class that produces the Knightly News for Midtown High School community. In the future, I hope to seek partnership with them to boost both of our platforms for the better.
